SUNSET THICKLIP GOURAMI | COLISA LABIOSA
SUNSET THICKLIP GOURAMI | COLISA LABIOSA
The Sunset Thicklip Gourami (Colisa labiosa), also known as the Sunset Honey Gourami or Thick-Lipped Gourami, is a peaceful and beautifully colored freshwater fish admired for its glowing orange, gold, and red tones. The “sunset” variation in particular features a radiant gradient of deep orange along the body fading into golden yellow near the head, with males showing even more intense coloration during breeding season.
Native to slow-moving waters in India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, this species grows to about 3–4 inches in length and thrives in well-planted aquariums of 20 gallons or larger. Ideal water conditions include a temperature range of 76–82°F, pH between 6.5–7.8, and gentle filtration with minimal current. They appreciate floating plants and dim lighting, which help mimic their natural habitat and make them feel secure.
Sunset Thicklip Gouramis are peaceful and do well in community aquariums with other calm species like tetras, rasboras, Cory catfish, small rainbowfish, or livebearers. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish. Males may show mild territorial behavior toward each other, so it’s best to keep one male per tank unless there’s plenty of space and cover.
They are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Regular feeding of color-enhancing foods helps keep their sunset hues bright and vivid.
The Sunset Thicklip Gourami is a hardy, gentle, and visually stunning fish — perfect for aquarists looking to add a peaceful centerpiece with glowing color to their freshwater community tank.
