The Sterbai Cory (Corydoras sterbai) is one of the most popular and beautiful corydoras catfish species in the aquarium hobby, admired for its striking pattern, peaceful temperament, and hardiness. Native to the slow-moving, warm waters of the upper Rio Guaporé region along the Bolivia–Brazil border, this species is easily recognized by its dark body covered in a network of white or light-blue spots and orange or golden highlights on its pectoral fins.

Adult Sterbai Corys grow to about 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm) and are extremely social fish that should always be kept in groups of at least six or more. When comfortable, they’re very active and spend their time peacefully foraging along the substrate for leftover food.

Ideal water parameters:
Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C) — slightly warmer than many other cory species
pH: 6.0–7.6
Hardness: 2–15 dGH

Tank setup: Sterbai Corys thrive in aquariums of 20 gallons or larger with soft, sandy substrate to protect their sensitive barbels. Provide driftwood, smooth rocks, caves, and live plants like Java Fern, Amazon Swords, or Cryptocorynes to create a natural environment. Good water movement and oxygenation are important, as they originate from well-oxygenated waters. Dim or moderate lighting helps them feel secure.

Diet: These corys are omnivores that readily eat a mix of sinking pellets, wafers, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also graze on leftover flakes or soft plant matter, helping keep the aquarium clean. A varied diet ensures proper coloration, energy, and breeding health.

Temperament and tankmates: Sterbai Corys are gentle and perfect for peaceful community aquariums. They get along wonderfully with small to medium-sized community fish such as tetras, rasboras, livebearers, dwarf gouramis, and peaceful cichlids like apistogrammas or rams. Avoid large or aggressive fish that may intimidate or outcompete them.

Breeding: They’re egg layers that often spawn after large water changes or cooler rain simulations. The female attaches adhesive eggs to glass, plants, or decorations. Adults don’t protect the eggs, so move them to a separate hatching tank for best survival rates.

In summary, the Sterbai Cory is a hardy, active, and incredibly attractive bottom dweller that brings both beauty and utility to a freshwater community tank. With its striking pattern, orange fins, and calm nature, it’s a top choice for aquarists who want a visually stunning, peaceful, and social cleanup crew for their aquarium.
