The Spotted Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata or closely related Gastromyzon species) is a fascinating and uniquely shaped freshwater fish often called a “freshwater stingray” because of its flat, disc-like body and wide pectoral fins. Native to the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams of Southeast Asia, this species is specially adapted to cling to rocks and graze on algae in strong currents. Its body is covered in attractive golden and brown spots or reticulated patterns, giving it a beautiful, natural camouflage against rocky substrates.

Adult Spotted Hillstream Loaches reach about 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm) and are peaceful, hardy bottom dwellers that thrive in well-oxygenated aquariums. Their unique appearance, combined with their gentle nature and algae-eating habits, makes them both a functional and ornamental addition to freshwater tanks.

Ideal water parameters:
Temperature: 68–75°F (20–24°C)
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: 5–15 dGH

Tank setup: These loaches require a mature, well-oxygenated aquarium with strong water movement that mimics their natural hillstream environment. Use smooth river rocks, driftwood, and rounded gravel or sand as substrate. They do best in aquariums of 30 gallons or more with powerful filtration and supplemental aeration. Cooler water and high oxygen levels are crucial. Provide shaded areas and algae-covered surfaces for grazing.

Diet: Spotted Hillstream Loaches are primarily grazers that feed on biofilm, algae, and microorganisms. In captivity, they should be given sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach), and occasional frozen or live foods such as bloodworms or daphnia for protein.

Temperament and tankmates: Extremely peaceful and shy, they do best in groups of three or more and coexist well with other calm, cool-water species. Ideal tankmates include white cloud minnows, danios, small rasboras, and other loaches. Avoid aggressive or large fish that could outcompete them for food or territory.

In summary, the Spotted Hillstream Loach is a captivating, gentle, and hardworking algae grazer that brings a touch of the mountain stream to your aquarium. Its intricate spotted pattern, unique ray-like shape, and fascinating behavior make it a must-have for aquarists seeking a peaceful, visually striking bottom dweller for a well-oxygenated, cool-water setup.
