Rosy Loach (Petruichthys sp. “rosy”) is a small, peaceful freshwater fish that has become increasingly popular in nano and planted aquariums. Known for its gentle nature, subtle coloration, and active schooling behavior, it’s an excellent choice for aquarists looking for something unique beyond the more common community fish.


Appearance

– Slender, torpedo-shaped body with hues of rosy pink, peach, or orange, often with a faint lateral stripe.
– Males typically show brighter colors, especially when displaying or during breeding.
– Reaches only 1–1.5 inches in length, making it a true nano species.


Behavior

– Peaceful and social, best kept in groups of 6 or more to encourage natural schooling behavior.

Tank Requirements

Tank Size: 10+ gallons, ideally with plenty of plants and hiding spaces.
Water Temperature: 72–78°F.
pH: 6.5–7.5.
– Prefer soft to moderately hard water.
– Substrate of sand or fine gravel allows for natural foraging.


Diet

– Omnivorous micro-predators that feed on small invertebrates in the wild.
– In captivity, accept high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, frozen and live foods like daphnia, cyclops, and baby brine shrimp.
– A varied diet enhances color and activity.


Breeding

– Breeding is rare in aquariums but possible under the right conditions.
– Males intensify in color when courting females.
– Eggs are typically scattered among plants or substrate without parental care.
