Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus)

The Redtail Catfish is a stunning freshwater species native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins of South America. Known for its distinctive bright red tail, dark body, white underside, and long whiskers, this impressive catfish is a favorite among monster fish enthusiasts.

Redtail Catfish are fast-growing, powerful predators that can develop surprisingly interactive personalities. However, their enormous adult size makes them suitable only for experienced aquarists with exceptionally large aquariums or indoor ponds.

Tank Setup & Compatibility

Provide a spacious aquarium with powerful filtration, excellent water quality, and plenty of open swimming space. Redtail Catfish produce substantial waste and require regular water changes.

Tank mates must be chosen carefully. Any fish small enough to fit inside a Redtail Catfish’s mouth may become a meal. Avoid housing them with small or delicate species.

Important Information

Please research the adult size and housing requirements before purchasing.
