The Gold Lyretail Molly (Poecilia latipinna or Poecilia sphenops, depending on strain) is a radiant and elegant livebearer variety known for its metallic golden body and gracefully extended lyre-shaped tail fins. This fish combines the hardy, adaptable nature of mollies with show-quality beauty, making it a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquarists. Under good lighting, the Gold Lyretail Molly glows with shimmering hues of yellow, orange, and gold, often accented by translucent or white-edged fins that flutter gently as it swims.

Adult Gold Lyretail Mollies typically grow to about 3–4 inches (7.5–10 cm), with males displaying the longest, most ornate tail extensions and females appearing fuller-bodied. They are social, peaceful, and constantly active, making them excellent additions to community tanks.

Ideal water parameters:
Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)
pH: 7.5–8.5
Hardness: 10–30 dGH

Tank setup: Gold Lyretail Mollies prefer slightly alkaline, mineral-rich water and thrive in tanks of 20 gallons or larger. Provide open swimming areas, gentle water movement, and plenty of plants or decorations for cover. They appreciate the addition of crushed coral or aragonite substrate to help maintain water hardness and pH. A small amount of aquarium salt can also mimic their natural brackish habitat, though it’s optional in freshwater setups.

Diet: Mollies are omnivorous with a strong preference for plant material. Feed them a varied diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, spirulina-based foods, and occasional live or frozen treats like brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia. Supplement with blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach to keep them healthy and enhance coloration.

Temperament and tankmates: Peaceful and social, Gold Lyretail Mollies thrive in groups and get along well with other calm community fish such as guppies, platies, swordtails, tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species that might damage their flowing tails.

Breeding: Like all mollies, they are livebearers—females give birth to fully formed fry every 4–6 weeks. Dense plants or breeding boxes provide safe hiding spots for baby fish.

In summary, the Gold Lyretail Molly is a graceful, hardy, and radiant livebearer that brings a touch of sunshine to any freshwater aquarium. With its golden shimmer, elegant tail shape, and easy-care nature, it’s a perfect choice for aquarists seeking both beauty and reliability in a peaceful community setup.
