DWARF BABY TEARS (HC)
DWARF BABY TEARS (HC)
Dwarf Baby Tears (Hemianthus callitrichoides, often called “HC” or “Cuba”) is one of the most popular and sought-after carpeting plants in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Known for its tiny, round leaves and lush green mats, it creates a beautiful, natural foreground that’s highly prized in aquascaping.
Appearance
– Very small, round, bright green leaves that grow densely together.
– Forms a compact carpet across the substrate, creating a natural “grass-like” effect.
– Usually stays under 3–5 cm tall, making it ideal for nano tanks and foregrounds.
Tank Requirements
– Lighting: Requires strong lighting to thrive and stay compact. In low light, it will grow upward and lose its carpet effect.
– CO₂: Performs best with added CO₂ injection, which encourages fast, healthy, and dense growth.
– Substrate: Prefers nutrient-rich substrate or aquasoil to root properly. Can also be grown on rocks or driftwood if tied down.
– Water Conditions:
– Temperature: 68–82°F
– pH: 5.5–7.5
– Soft to medium-hard water
Growth & Care
– Propagation: Grows by sending out runners along the substrate. Simply trim and replant small clusters to expand coverage.
– Maintenance: Needs regular trimming to prevent the lower layers from suffocating and to keep the carpet thick and even.
– Placement: Best as a foreground carpeting plant in aquascapes, especially in Iwagumi (stone-based) or nature-style layouts.
Benefits in the Aquarium
– Creates a stunning, natural “lawn” look for aquascapes.
– Provides hiding spaces for shrimp, fry, and small fish.
– Improves water quality by absorbing nitrates and producing oxygen.
– Great for nano aquariums, adding depth and scale.
Dwarf Baby Tears (HC) is considered a moderately challenging plant because of its need for strong light, CO₂, and nutrient-rich substrate. However, when its conditions are met, it rewards aquarists with one of the most beautiful and iconic aquarium carpets available.
