The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is one of the most stunning and graceful freshwater fish available, admired for its shimmering, rainbow-like iridescence and flowing fins. Native to the slow-moving tributaries and streams of the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, this species displays a captivating spectrum of color—metallic blue, gold, violet, and orange hues that sparkle under aquarium lighting. Its long, trailing fins and peaceful schooling nature make it a showpiece in any community aquarium.

Adult Congo Tetras grow to about 3–3.5 inches (7.5–9 cm), with males being larger and more colorful, often developing elongated dorsal and tail fins edged in white or silver. Females are slightly smaller and have subtler coloration, but still contribute to the beauty and harmony of the group.

Ideal water parameters:
Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 3–18 dGH

Tank setup: Congo Tetras thrive in aquariums of at least 40 gallons, with subdued lighting and soft, slightly acidic water that mimics their natural habitat. A dark substrate, driftwood, and live plants like Amazon Swords, Vallisneria, or Anubias help accentuate their color. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six or more to reduce stress and bring out their best behavior and coloration.

Diet: These tetras are omnivorous and appreciate a varied diet. Offer high-quality flakes or micro-pellets as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Regular feedings of protein-rich foods enhance their colors and fin health.

Temperament and tankmates: Congo Tetras are peaceful and active, making them ideal for medium to large community aquariums. They pair well with other calm species such as rainbowfish, gouramis, angelfish, rasboras, corydoras, and peaceful loaches. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species that could damage their delicate fins.

In summary, the Congo Tetra is a majestic, colorful, and tranquil schooling fish that brings elegance and movement to any freshwater aquarium. With its vibrant hues, flowing fins, and gentle personality, it’s a top choice for aquarists who want a peaceful yet visually striking display in their tank.
