BUENOS AIRES TETRA
BUENOS AIRES TETRA
Buenos Aires Tetra (Hyphessobrycon anisitsi) is a hardy and active freshwater fish native to the rivers of South America, particularly around Buenos Aires, Argentina. It’s a popular species for community aquariums because of its durability and bright appearance.
This tetra grows up to about 2.5 inches (6 cm) and has a silvery body with hints of red or orange in the fins, especially on mature males. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5), temperatures around 72–79°F (22–26°C), and benefit from a tank of at least 20 gallons with open swimming space and some plants.
They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 or more to reduce fin nipping behavior. Buenos Aires Tetras are omnivores—accepting flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and vegetables like blanched spinach or zucchini.
One important note: they may nip at soft or fine-leaved plants, so hardier plant species (like Anubias or Java Fern) are better choices if you want a planted setup. They do best with other fast or similarly sized community fish, avoiding slow or long-finned species like angelfish or bettas.
