BLUE RABBIT SNAILS
BLUE RABBIT SNAILS
Blue Rabbit Snails (Tylomelania gemmifera) are rare and captivating freshwater snails from Sulawesi, Indonesia, known for their elongated, spiraled shells and striking blue to slate-colored bodies. Their shells are usually dark brown to black with a pointed shape that can reach up to 3–4 inches long, while their vivid blue or grayish-blue skin gives them a truly exotic appearance in any aquarium.
These snails are peaceful and plant-safe, making them excellent additions to community aquariums with shrimp, tetras, Corydoras, or other gentle fish. They prefer warm, clean, well-oxygenated water with temperatures between 78–84°F and a pH of 7.6–8.2. Because they originate from mineral-rich waters, they require stable hardness and good calcium levels to maintain healthy shells.
Blue Rabbit Snails are slow-moving grazers that feed on algae, leftover food, and detritus, though they also enjoy supplemental foods like algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach. They are livebearers, giving birth to one fully formed baby snail at a time rather than laying egg clutches.
They thrive best in tanks with fine sand or smooth substrate to protect their long shells from damage. Blue Rabbit Snails add both beauty and curiosity to freshwater setups — they’re hardy, long-lived, and sure to become a centerpiece in any aquascape.
