BLUE GLASS GUPPY | POECILIA RETICULATUS
BLUE GLASS GUPPY | POECILIA RETICULATUS
The Blue Glass Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a beautiful and translucent guppy variety admired for its shimmering pale-blue coloration and delicate, almost “glass-like” appearance. Its semi-transparent body allows soft light to pass through, creating an elegant, glowing effect under aquarium lighting. Depending on the strain, the fish may show pastel shades of blue, silver, or turquoise, often paired with subtle metallic highlights on the fins and tail.
Adult males reach about 1.5 inches (3.5–4 cm), while females grow slightly larger, up to 2.5 inches (6 cm). Males tend to display brighter coloration and longer, more decorative fins. The Blue Glass Guppy is peaceful, hardy, and active—making it ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
Ideal water parameters:
Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH: 7.0–8.0
Hardness: 8–20 dGH
Tank setup: Blue Glass Guppies thrive in well-planted aquariums with gentle filtration and stable water quality. Their subtle colors look best against a dark substrate with moderate lighting. Provide open swimming space and floating plants like Hornwort or Frogbit to create shade and shelter for fry. A 10-gallon tank or larger is suitable for a small group. As livebearers, females can give birth every 4–6 weeks, so providing dense vegetation or breeder boxes will help protect baby guppies.
Diet: They are omnivorous and benefit from a balanced diet of high-quality flakes or micro pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Including vegetable-based foods such as spirulina flakes enhances their color and vitality.
Temperament and tankmates: Blue Glass Guppies are gentle and social, thriving in groups and doing well with other peaceful community fish. Good tankmates include platies, mollies, endlers, tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. Avoid fin-nippers or aggressive fish that could damage their delicate fins.
In summary, the Blue Glass Guppy is a serene and elegant addition to any freshwater aquarium. Its translucent beauty, easy care, and peaceful nature make it an excellent choice for aquarists seeking both color and refinement in their tank.
