The Blue Delta Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a stunning and graceful livebearer known for its vibrant blue coloration and large, flowing delta-shaped tail. The “delta” name refers to the triangular, fan-like shape of the caudal fin, which spreads wide and shimmers as the fish swims. This guppy variety is especially prized by aquarists for its metallic blue sheen that can range from deep cobalt to electric sky blue, depending on lighting and genetics.

Adult males typically grow to about 1.5 inches (3.5–4 cm) and display intense coloration with long, elegant fins. Females are larger (up to 2.5 inches or 6 cm) and more rounded, with subtler coloration but equally active personalities.

Ideal water parameters:
Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH: 7.0–8.0
Hardness: 8–20 dGH

Tank setup: Blue Delta Guppies thrive in planted tanks with gentle filtration, open swimming space, and stable water quality. They enjoy floating plants like Hornwort or Water Sprite, which provide shade and cover for fry. A 10-gallon tank is suitable for a small group, but larger tanks allow for better schooling and more natural behavior. Females can give birth every 4–6 weeks, producing live fry that can be raised separately to preserve the line’s color and fin quality.

Diet: They are omnivores and easy to feed. Offer a varied diet of high-quality flake food or micro pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Occasional spirulina or vegetable-based foods enhance color vibrancy and health.

Temperament and tankmates: Blue Delta Guppies are peaceful and social, thriving in groups and coexisting well with other gentle community fish such as mollies, platies, endlers, tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species that could damage their flowing fins.

In summary, the Blue Delta Guppy combines dazzling color, elegance, and hardiness—making it a perfect choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. With its shimmering blue tones and graceful movement, it brings life and beauty to any freshwater aquarium.
