BLACK BAR ENDLER
BLACK BAR ENDLER
The Black Bar Endler (Poecilia wingei) is a vibrant and compact livebearer species prized for its intense coloration and striking pattern. Native to the warm, clear waters of northeastern Venezuela, this pure Endler strain features a metallic green or blue body accented by a bold vertical black bar on each side, often accompanied by vivid orange, yellow, or red highlights on the tail and fins. The contrast of bright neon colors against the dark bar makes this fish one of the most eye-catching nano species in the aquarium hobby.
Adult males stay small—typically around 1 inch (2.5 cm)—and display the brightest and most detailed colors. Females are larger, up to 1.5 inches (3.5 cm), and have a more subdued silvery tone. Though tiny, these fish are active, social, and full of personality, constantly darting and displaying in the tank.
Ideal water parameters:
Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH: 6.8–8.0
Hardness: 8–20 dGH
Tank setup:
Black Bar Endlers thrive in well-planted aquariums with gentle filtration, stable water conditions, and open swimming areas. A 10-gallon or larger tank is ideal for a small colony. Live plants like Hornwort, Java Moss, and Water Sprite provide hiding spots for fry and help maintain water quality. Since they are livebearers, females give birth every 3–4 weeks, so dense vegetation helps protect fry from being eaten.
Diet:
These Endlers are omnivores that do best on a balanced, varied diet. Feed high-quality micro-pellets or flakes daily, and supplement with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables help maintain color and overall health.
Temperament and tankmates:
Black Bar Endlers are peaceful, lively, and social. They thrive in groups and make excellent community fish for nano or planted tanks. Ideal companions include guppies, platies, rasboras, small tetras, ricefish, and corydoras. Avoid larger or aggressive species that could outcompete or harass them.
In summary, the Black Bar Endler (Poecilia wingei) is a dazzling, hardy, and endlessly active fish that adds a burst of color and motion to any freshwater aquarium. With its neon hues, signature black markings, and gentle nature, it’s a top choice for aquarists seeking a low-maintenance, high-impact species that thrives in small or community setups.
