Zebra Nerite Snails (Neritina natalensis) are one of the most popular freshwater snails for aquariums, known for their bold striped shells and excellent algae-eating abilities. They are hardy, attractive, and ideal for both beginners and experienced aquarists who want a natural and effective cleanup crew.

Appearance

Zebra Nerite Snails have striking shells patterned with alternating black and yellow or golden stripes, resembling a zebra’s pattern. They stay relatively small, usually around 1 inch in size, making them perfect for nano and community tanks.

Tank Requirements

– Tank size: 5+ gallons
– Water temperature: 72–78°F
– pH: 7.0–8.5 (harder water helps maintain strong shells)
– Require a secure lid since they can climb out of tanks
– Do not harm plants, making them safe for planted aquariums

Behavior

Zebra Nerite Snails are peaceful and highly active algae grazers. They will constantly move along glass, rocks, driftwood, and plants, leaving surfaces spotless. They are completely safe with fish, shrimp, and other community tankmates.

Diet

They primarily feed on algae and biofilm in the tank, but if algae is limited, they should be supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber), or calcium-rich snail foods to maintain shell health.

Breeding

While Zebra Nerites may lay small white eggs on glass and decorations, they cannot reproduce in freshwater. Their larvae require brackish or saltwater to develop, so you never have to worry about overpopulation in your aquarium.

Benefits in the Aquarium

– Among the best algae-eating snails available
– Do not eat or damage live plants
– Completely peaceful and safe with shrimp and fish
– Unique striped shells add beauty and contrast to aquascapes

Zebra Nerite Snails are a perfect choice for keeping algae under control while adding a bold, eye-catching look to freshwater tanks. Hardy, low-maintenance, and non-invasive, they are one of the most effective and attractive snails you can keep.
