3 ONION NERITE SNAILS
3 ONION NERITE SNAILS
Onion Nerite Snails are a peaceful freshwater snail species known for their attractive rounded shells that resemble small onions. Their shells typically display golden to light brown coloration with darker banding or subtle patterning, making them stand out nicely in planted or aquascaped tanks. Like other Nerites, they are excellent algae eaters—they clean glass, rocks, driftwood, and decorations without harming plants.
They stay relatively small, around 1 inch in diameter, and do not reproduce in freshwater (their eggs won’t hatch), so they won’t overrun your tank. Ideal for tanks of 5 gallons or larger, Onion Nerites thrive in water with a pH of 7.0–8.2 and temperatures between 72–82°F.
They get along well with shrimp, Cory catfish, small tetras, and other peaceful species. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or snail-eating fish like loaches or puffers. To keep their shells healthy, maintain good calcium levels in the water and provide algae wafers or blanched vegetables as supplemental food when algae are scarce.
